cinematographer and director
My journey began with “The Voyage of the Beagle” by Charles Darwin. Since I read it when I was a kid I always wanted to become an audacious naturalist as mr. Darwin himself. Therefore I studied in a scientific high school, then I get a master’s degree in Natural Sciences.
At the beginning everything was working according to my plans: I spent 6 months studying sea turtles on a remote beach on the Mexican pacific coast. Not bad at all. Then I found myself analyzing Drosophila’s (aka the fruit fly) motoneurons in a Swedish lab, and I realized that the life of a scientist could also be very boring (joking aside, my study was even published https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/17443798/).
The unexpected twist arrived when I started working as an intern at DocLab, a very well known Italian documentary production company based in Rome. One of my first jobs was researching and writing for SuperQuark, the most prestigious scientific show on Italian TV, there I meet Piero Angela, the most prominent Italian scientific journalist, an another dream come true. https://vimeo.com/345869604.
From this experience I realized that my future was in documentary filmmaking. I spent almost three years at DocLab learning from the best teachers in all departments: writing, production, directing, sound and cinematography.
After that I decided to come back to my home town, Milan, and to begin freelance work. As a freelance I have directed and also shot as a director of photography several commercials, branded content and documentaries around the world, including the place I had been dreaming of since I was a kid: Galapagos Islands! https://vimeo.com/818668766.
At the center of my work there are curiosity and power of observation, skills derived from my personal scientific background. Beside that I have also developed a deep interest in beauty.
My concept of beauty is not manichean, it is more about a constant research. Quoting the great master Vittorio De Seta, “the easiest way to photograph a butterfly is to nail it in a showcase, but then it is dead”.
I believe that Vitality is an essential part of Beauty, even with its imperfection.
